Alabama Patent of the Month – April 2025
A breakthrough in spinal implant technology could reshape recovery for thousands of patients each year. Curiteva, Inc. has been granted U.S. Patent No. 12,263,278 for “Additively manufactured porous polymer medical implants,” marking a significant advancement in 3D-printed medical devices.
Mimicking Bone with Precision Engineering
The patent covers implants made from polyaryletherketone (PAEK), a strong, biocompatible polymer. Using additive manufacturing, Curiteva produces porous structures that closely replicate natural bone. This architecture supports bone ingrowth, potentially improving the fusion between implant and spine.
Each layer of the implant uses a continuous PAEK strand with varying shapes and thickness. The exterior is engineered for greater crystallinity, which may influence how bone cells respond and attach. These features are designed to enhance integration and long-term performance.
Real-World Impact on Spine Surgery
Curiteva’s approach has already reached clinical application. Its Inspire™ 3D Porous PEEK HA-FUSE™ Cervical Interbody System has received FDA 510(k) clearance. By mimicking both the structure and mechanics of bone, these implants may lead to quicker recovery times and more reliable surgical outcomes.
This development highlights the growing role of 3D printing in personalized medicine and the value of sustained R&D in improving patient care.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
