Alabama Patent of the Month – December 2022

CFD Research Corporation has been awarded a patent for their design of a door breach device.

CFD Research Corp specializes in engineering simulations, advanced prototypes, and innovative designs for a broad range of industries including aerospace, defense, life sciences, materials, and energy.

Outward opening and reinforced doors are typically harder to break in as the breacher has to fight against both the door and the jam. Some methods for breaching these doors include explosives, ballistics, or puncture mechanisms. Prying the door open usually takes too long and alerts the person on the other side.

CFD Research Corp’s design uses a mechanical tool with a spearhead to puncture the door. Once the spearhead pushes through the door, it pivots, creating a brace against the flat surface of the door. This bracing is achieved by weighting the spearhead and taking advantage of gravitational forces. Once braced, the breacher can pull on the door with the tool, forcing it open. This design breaches a door rapidly with minimal effort and no need for explosives.

The company performs early stage technology development including initial concept ideation, design & analysis, prototype fabrication, test & evaluation, and occasionally low rate production. These efforts are supported by their expert engineers who provide real-world insight into challenges and drive the company’s innovation.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
