Alabama Patent of the Month – January 2022

If you smell gas but can’t discern where it’s coming from, it’s important to leave the area and report the potential leak to the right people. Odor can be a key indicator of safety hazards that aren’t immediately detectable by the human eye. Unfortunately, the methods of identifying an odor are quite limited. The odor may only be present intermittently, it may be hard to get a sufficient sample of the cause of the odor, and you would still need to send it out to a lab for testing.

Volatile Analysis Corp. has developed a more efficient and time effective method for odor analysis. Their system allows an operator to perform a preliminary analysis and identification while still at the location of the odor. This provides insight into next steps immediately, rather than sending the sample out for analysis. The system uses an odor processing device to collect samples and returns information to the user. The information – or odor notes – are based on the separated and concentrated molecules gathered in the sample. The user can add in their own information (i.e. intensity, duration, additional odor descriptors). The odor notes and user notes are then analyzed to perform a preliminary identification. This can also confirm if the sample taken will be sufficient to bring to a lab for a more complete analysis afterwards. This system enhances the ability to respond to an odor properly. If it’s a hazardous odor, then evacuation can be started immediately. If it’s just a nasty smell, then identifying the cause of the odor can indicate how to get rid of the odor. Either way, with Volatile Analysis’ system, the answer has never been more readily available.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
