Alabama Patent of the Month – January 2023

The dangers of being trapped in a confined space are a concern for anyone who spends time in a vehicle, boat or other enclosed area. With the CO2 detection system developed by Venturi LLC, this threat is eliminated. The system monitors the CO2 and temperature levels in a confined space and alerts potential responders to any danger.

Venturi’s system uses a CO2 sensor to measure the current CO2 concentration to determine whether this concentration is greater than an ambient CO2 level and the rate of decay of the CO2 level. If the CO2 level is not decaying fast enough, the sensor control device increments a timer. When the timer is greater than the stabilization value, the system determines whether the volume is currently moving or is static.

If the CO2 volume is static and the temperature in the volume is outside of the acceptable range, the system sends out an alert. The alerts are tiered, with the first few alerts being a notification to contacts previously set up by the user and, if these alerts are not cleared by the contact, subsequent alerts are sent to emergency officials. The alerts also include the status and location information of the volume.

Venturi is a Huntsville, Alabama-based corporation, operating as a Small Disadvantaged Business committed to delivering Test and Evaluation, Range and Launch Operations, Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Logistics, Program Management and other technical support services to the U.S. Government.
