Alabama Patent of the Month – June 2022

Air quality is a key component to day-to-day health and can contribute to the spread of bacteria and viruses. Indoor air quality has become an increasingly important issue with a growing demand for sterile environments. If the air quality can be improved and purified, we can be protected from mold, viruses, and bacteria that could be potential health risks.

While there are some existing air purifying devices that rely on UV light to decontaminate air as it passes through, these are usually hooked up to existing HVAC systems. The portable versions struggle to purify a large volume of air with any speed.

VentorLux, LLC has designed an air purification system that can better treat high volumes of air with a reduced energy consumption. This reduction in energy consumption is achieved using two sets of propellers which rotate in opposite directions of each other. Each set is mounted in reverse, creating linear air flow and thrust which sucks air in through the inlet and blows it out through the outlet.

This linear airflow has the air pass through a light core system. A ring-shaped assembly is set up with multiple UV-C LEDs which direct the light at the air, killing bio-organisms while dissipating the heat created by the lights themselves. This device draws air in and sterilizes it faster than a traditional purifying system, while offering a cost-reduction in operation.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
