Alaska Patent of the Month – April 2021

Those working in the natural resource management industry know the trouble of correctly identifying an individual specimen in a target population. Presently, identifying methods are all manual, involving a supervisor recognizing physical characteristics of the individuals. These methods are not efficient at all and often limited to small populations. Biopar, LLC has developed a system which uniquely identifies subjects from a target population using automated, rapid image processing techniques.

Their system involves the collection of images of uniquely identifying subjects in order to build a database with sufficient information. Individuals have varying characteristics that are used to identify them – size, color, pattern, position of physical features etc. The first time an individual is processed, an image is taken and a record is added to the database with the unique features. If that individual is imaged again later, it will be recognized by the system. The database can keep track of changes to that individual and note a prolonged absence from the population.

Biopar calls their system TNT : The Natural Tag, and is happy to contribute a tagging method that does not involve physically tagging and impacting the individual. This system contributes to scalability, efficiency, and animal care in the field. Using high speed camera, high speed computers, and some R&D – the system is functional and incredibly accurate.

Are you developing new software for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
