Alaska Patent of the Month – June 2025
An innovative new system for building stability may transform how structures withstand shifting ground and harsh climates. A newly disclosed invention from North Arrow Enterprises, LLC introduces a modular, adjustable foundation that can be installed quickly, altered easily, and remain stable even in extreme environments. Unlike traditional concrete or pile foundations, this solution adapts as soil conditions change-reducing maintenance costs and increasing building longevity.
Redefining structural support
The invention centers on modular post elements that can be lengthened or shortened, both during and after installation. These posts consist of an inner and outer section, with the outer post sliding along the inner one. A lifting plate at the base enables vertical adjustments, while customizable beams and braces allow adaptation to different loads and settings.
Built for tough conditions
Designed for locations where concrete isn’t viable-like permafrost zones or remote areas-the system helps prevent common issues like frost heaving or uneven settling. Traditional post-and-pad foundations often fail over time due to limited adjustability. This patent addresses those weaknesses by enabling safe, precise, and repeatable foundation adjustments using a jack system such as a screw or bottle jack.
Flexible, safe, and cost-efficient
Each foundation unit includes integrated connection points, rotating braces, and bracket mounts for structural stability. Builders can modify the foundation without compromising safety, even long after initial installation. This adjustability offers significant advantages for temporary structures, remote housing, and infrastructure in unstable terrain.
Rethinking what’s possible below ground
By simplifying and strengthening the way buildings stand on uncertain soil, North Arrow’s modular system could become a key tool for engineers and contractors seeking durable, low-maintenance alternatives to traditional foundations.
