Alaska Patent of the Month – March 2025

March 2025 brought no new utility patents originating from Alaska, but the story of innovation in the state remains far from idle. While there isn’t a specific patent to spotlight this month, it’s worth acknowledging that innovation is not always linear—or immediate.

Alaska’s unique industries, from renewable energy and natural resource management to cold-climate engineering, often operate on seasonal timelines. The patent process itself is methodical and deliberate, involving extensive research, validation, and strategic planning before an application is ever filed. A quiet month like March may, in fact, be a sign of something bigger brewing beneath the surface.

It’s also a reminder that patents are only one visible outcome of a much larger innovation cycle. Entrepreneurs, engineers, and researchers across the state continue to push boundaries, even when the results haven’t yet reached the USPTO.

Swanson Reed remains committed to championing inventors throughout Alaska. Whether you’re mid-prototype or refining a concept, now is the time to explore how intellectual property protection and R&D tax strategies can work in your favor. The work you’re doing today could very well become the headline patent of tomorrow.

We look forward to highlighting Alaska’s next big innovation in the months to come.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
