Alaska Patent of the Month – November 2022

Mobile IV Systems, LLC (MIVS), a medical device company, has focused their expertise on the design and development of personalized IV therapy treatments. The safe and accelerated infusion of IV fluids can help to restore your body’s natural balance. IV technologies remained largely unchanged since their inception in1883. MIVS’ technology is changing this.

Recently, MIVS has developed and patented a pressure-regulating device that supports pressure infused IV delivery. A pressure infusor is a device used to pressurize a bag containing intravenous fluids so as to increase the infusion rate into the patient. Controlling this pressure is essential to the safe delivery of IV fluids. The pressure regulator intakes gas at one pressure and regulates (i.e. increase or reduce) the pressure of the compressed gas to the optimal pressure for delivery. This is achieved using an expansion chamber that can compress or expand to adapt the pressure.

The pressure regulator supports the company’s auto-regulated pressure infuser (ARPI) which delivers a constant pressure of 5 PSI on an attached pressure sleeve. This replicates the force of gravity on an IV fluid bag suspended at a height of 39-44” above the heart (i.e. traditional clinical setup). This pressure is maintained throughout the entire infusion, regardless of the placement or movement of the unit. This ensures IV fluids can be safely delivered out on the field or in emergency situations.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
