Alaska Patent of the Month – September 2021

With the onset of mass remote work, video conferencing has skyrocketed. As more people use different video conferencing methods, we start to see the limitations of some of these services. Katmai Tech Holdings believes the biggest limitation is the loss of social relations during work. You can’t hold side conversations and the use of body language is severely limited, reducing the interactions we can have. Katmai has been developing a better video conferencing method that aims to bring back that social aspect.

Recently, they have added a presenter mode for use in their 3D virtual conference. The users can use their regular webcams, as the system automatically takes this data and texture maps a 3D avatar for use in the virtual conference. At the same time, a presentation stream from the device of the presenter is texture mapped onto a 3D model of a presentation screen. The avatars can readily reflect the facial expressions of the user, increasing the social interaction levels for remote video conferencing. Audio levels are adjusted from left to right to correspond to the relative positioning of other users. Each secondary user (ie. non presenter) can then view the presentation as though they are in an actual presentation room, interacting with the other participants, and gaining that highly missed social interaction.
