Arizona Patent of the Month – December 2022

A conventional brake pedal lever for motorcycles is generally located on one side of the motorcycle so that the driver can easily operate the brakes. The lever has a tip peg which extends out and makes it easier to control the brakes. Unfortunately, when parked, this tip peg is an easy target for passerby’s shins. If the motorcycle falls over, it is also the first point of contact with the ground and rarely survives the crash.

Flo Motorsports, experts in motorcycle design and engineering, have recently designed a nicer tip peg which is better equipped for long-term durability. The design includes pivoting members that allow the peg to move about with more flexibility. Torsion springs are positioned around the pivots and force the peg to return to its original position. The springs also help the peg absorb force if the motorcycle falls over.

Flo Motorsports has had the leading patented design for unbreakable Clutch and Brake Levers since 2018. In 2019, they were ranked #1 recommended foot peg design. Their continuous effort towards innovation and R&D has contributed to pushing the boundaries of the industry and improving durability and functionality.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
