Arizona Patent of the Month – June 2025
Alphacore Inc. has secured U.S. Patent No. 12335649 for a breakthrough in signal sampling technology. The patent, titled ‘Methods and systems for signal sampling using spatial dispersion and photonics assistance’, introduces an innovative method to improve signal analysis using light and spatial dispersion techniques.
Revolutionizing Signal Sampling with Photonics
This invention uses a combination of time-to-wavelength and wavelength-to-space dispersion to convert electrical signals into spatially spread optical pulses. By modulating these pulses with an input signal, the system can transform complex data into frequency domain information through an optical Fast Fourier Transform (FFT).
The key advancement lies in leveraging a two-dimensional photodetector array that captures the frequency-transformed optical signals and converts them into electrical signals. A processor then decodes these signals to extract precise frequency data from the original input.
Improved Accuracy and Efficiency
Traditional electronic signal sampling is limited by physical constraints, such as resistance and thermal noise. This patented system reduces such limitations by using photonics to “stretch” signals optically before digitization, offering enhanced bandwidth and resolution.
Moreover, the system can output the processed signals visually as an image, making it easier for users to interpret optical spectrum data. This method promises smaller, more energy-efficient devices compared to current photonic sampling systems, which tend to be bulky and power-hungry.
Real-World Impact
Applications of this technology span telecommunications, radar, and advanced sensor systems. By improving signal clarity and reducing power consumption, it enables faster, more accurate frequency analysis critical for modern electronic systems.
