Arizona Patent of the Month – March 2022

Machine vision is a growing technology field. EDGE3 Technologies, LLC has been growing this technology since 2005, working to commercialize the computer vision and AI technology developed by Embry RIddle Machine Vision Lab. Since then, EDGE3 Technologies has become a leading supplier of end-to-end Ambient AI and Vision Analytics products in the automotive, transportation, and logistics industries.

Recently, EDGE3 Technologies developed a gesture recognition system to support this machine vision. Gesture recognition is used to help the computer system determine if a person being observed is moving their body in meaningful ways. The system observes the person in view, identifies and processes the gestures, and uses this information to execute commands. This system functions by receiving raw frames from cameras, each of which represents a time sequence of images. The system then uses a still reference frame to identify new objects in the image, using changed positions and objects to determine movement.

This gesture recognition system can be used in a wide variety of cases. For example, a user could interact with a video game and make their character move without touching a remote. Picture those dancing games where you had to hold a little joystick so the game could track your movements. Now imagine if you didn’t need the joystick. The gesture recognition system could also be used to control a kiosk or guide other computer controlled technologies.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
