Arkansas Patent of the Month – April 2021

Arrivo BioVentures, LLC focuses on the development of biopharmaceuticals. They want to accelerate the clinical development procedure and get biologics and small molecules into the field, improving patient’s lives. When it comes to diagnostic techniques, like MRI and bio-assays, there remains no in vivo, real-time method for counting of individual and abnormal cells in blood circulation. Instead, a blood sample must be drawn and sent to the lab for testing. New methods used in animal trials involved fluorescent labeling – a promising technique – unfortunately, these fluorophores are largely toxic to humans. BioVentures has developed a unique system which offers in vivo detection in real time.

Their fractionated photoacoustic flow cytometry (PAFC) uses a laser system to target an object within the biofluid system. A fractionated optical system then separates the laser beam to fractionally display across the skin. An acoustic system with an ultrasound transducer receives photoacoustic signals emitted back by the target in response to the laser. These signals are then processed and analyzed to produce an accurate count of normal and abnormal cells.

This in vivo testing method provides better early diagnostic abilities for cardiovascular disorders, cancers, and infections. No blood sample is needed, and so there is no limit by the size of the blood sample. This reduces the chance of abnormal cells being missed in detection. It can be adjusted for analysis of most biofluids, from blood to urine, to cerebrospinal fluids. The fractionated PAFC offers a robust and non-invasive diagnostic tool.

Are you developing new technology for a new application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
