Arkansas Patent of the Month – February 2022

Food processing plants often have a complex system of equipment, products, and logistics which work together to optimize the operation. Food processing is a very important process for our day to day life. However, the foods and chemicals involved result in a fairly caustic environment which means equipment failure is very common. Because of this, these plants often have a large number of employees present to monitor equipment and systems. Unfortunately, even a highly trained professional may not be able to quickly identify the cause of any error.

Safe Foods Corp. has developed an automated monitoring system that takes the guesswork out of equipment failure. The control system receives data from individual machines and determines the precise location of a fault, should one occur. For instance, the plant might have an evisceration system with antimicrobial subsystems to defeather and treat poultry. If a pipe or some other aspect fails, the system can detect a drop in pressure to a point source and better guide maintenance efforts. The system can also adjust parameters of various machines as needed to account for minute changes in food processing.

As a global leader in food safety management, Safe Foods Corp has worked towards creating a safer food supply for the world through improved antimicrobials and equipment options. Improving, and automating, food processing systems can help reduce the risk of poorly processed food and reduce downtime when equipment fails.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
