Arkansas Patent of the Month – May 2022

Bad Boy Mowers, LLC have been developing and expanding the world of lawn mowers for more than 15 years. In fact, they’ve made their name as the fastest growing zero-turn mower manufacturer on the planet. When it comes to designing and optimizing these lawn mowers, the company innovates every component. Recently, they have patented their zero-turn-radius (ZTR) riding mower caster wheel stabilizer.

Traditional caster wheels are prone to “caster flutter” or wobble. This is caused when the wheel is harmonically excited, causing the wheel to wobble back and forth. If it becomes severe enough, the operator ends up limited in speed and must go slow to prevent the wobble. With Bad Boy Mowers wheel stabilizer, this wobble can be avoided.

Their design prevents any excessive pre-load on the caster bearings, effectively generating resistance to the swiveling of the wheel assembly. The stabilizer is positioned in the bearing housing of the caster wheel system and provides the needed resistance by contacting the piece which causes the caster wheel to rotate. This much needed resistance ensures the wheel remains true and steady, even when higher speeds are reached.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
