Arkansas Patent of the Month – October 2021

Antimicrobial compositions are often used on animal carcasses during food processing and harvesting to control pathogens. Unfortunately the use of these antimicrobials can make it difficult to properly dispose of the carcasses in traditional manners. For instance, antimicrobial compositions can’t be washed down a wastewater system without contaminating the system. A variety of antimicrobial capture systems have been constructed  but are rarely efficient enough to fully capture antimicrobials.

Safe Foods Corporation has committed themselves to creating a safer food supply for the world. One way they are working on this, is the development of a more efficient and accurate antimicrobial capture system. Their design uses a container whose interior is partially filled with carbon granules which are capable of removing a portion of the antimicrobials. The design also uses an agitator positioned at the bottom of the container, agitating the carbon granules by producing air bubbles in the liquid. A drain allows the liquid to drain out of the container with a standpipe adjoining to drain to the exterior. The drain is positioned to allow liquid with antimicrobials out, without letting the liquid level drop below the carbon granules. The carbon remains submerged indefinitel as they can be recycled until they cease to remove antimicrobials effectively.

This system can be easily integrated into existing plants or built into new food processing plants. By reusing carbon granules, costs are lowered and a higher sustainability is achieved, all while increasing the efficiency of the system.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
