The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) to Develop New Diagnostic, Monitoring and Therapeutic Technologies for the Complications of Type 1 Diabetes program focuses on early detection and monitoring techniques. This program does allow research that includes animals with type 2 diabetes or subjects with type 2 diabetes. Idea areas of research and development include:

  • Development of early detection, diagnosis, and quantification and measurement tools and accurate biomarkers
  • Development of methodologies and biomarkers to help understand T1D complications
  • Development of non-invasive or minimally invasve measurement technologies
  • Applications that allow molecular level visualization for hyperglycemia damage visualization
  • Development of better predictors of accelerated development and progression
  • Development of prevention and/or treatment of complications of T1D
  • Novel imaging/non-invasive prediction technologies
  • New or improved technologies/biomaterials for diabetes wounds
  • Development of portable technologies for emergency and at home use

There are three types of applications allowed: New proposals (Phase I), Renewal grants (Phase II) and Resubmission applications. Typical award amounts of not more than $150,000 for Phase I projects and up to $1,500,000 for Phase II projects with project duration of up to two years; however congress may allow awards to exceed maximum allowances of up to 50%. All applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicant must be an organized for-profit organization located within the U.S. and operating in the U.S.
