California Patent of the Month – December 2021
Additive manufacturing has grown in popularity as the techniques have been finetuned and improved on. It provides a simple solution for rapid prototyping and the fabrication of specialty components. Photopolymer-based 3D printing produces a 3D structure by layering polymeric materials and selectively curing it with a special light. Some versions use bottom up illumination by projecting light up through an optically transparent window, curing the photoreactive resin. Curing the resin allows it to securely adhere to the previous layer.
Holo, Inc. has set their sights on revolutionizing the additive manufacturing industry even further. Their designs improve product performance and reliability, making additive manufacturing an even more reliable option.
Recently, they have patented their own 3D printing system which uses viscous liquids, print windows, and light based curing methods. Their system improves on existing photoreactive curing methods by using two lights, each with a unique wavelength. This increases the control over the photopolymerization process as the viscou liquid is deposited on the printing platform.
This, combined with Holo’s high resolution optical imagers can more efficiently map and print an entire plane at a time. They’ve also combined Metal Injection Molding (MIM) backend processes to improve scalability and high volume manufacturing. Their system also works well at scale for copper and other challenging materials. Holo’s designs are set to remove constraints in production and manufacturing.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
