California Patent of the Month – December 2022
RICE – Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation – is the standard protocol for treating a traumatized area of the human body. Applying cold and compression to the area has been proven to facilitate healing and prevent unwanted consequences of the trauma. CoolSystems, Inc. (DBA Game Ready) has used this proven therapeutic technique to guide their development of a rapid contrast therapy device.
Their design is a device that provides rapid contrast therapy that applies cold and heat in alternating bursts. The system circulates cold and hot fluids through a hose that wraps along a therapy wrap and back to the fluid reservoirs. While typical treatment alternates 3 minutes of heat with 1 minute of cold, the treatment can be adjusted as needed.
They have also combined compression capabilities. When applied by itself, the wrap pumps air through the circulation tubes to increase pressure and cause compression. Compression and thermal therapy can be achieved using a combination of fluid and air pressure through the circulation tubes.
Combining cryotherapy and compression therapy reduces pain and edema and improves surgical outcomes. For instance, patients who received ACL surgeries had increased postoperative range of motion. From happier recovery times to shorter hospital recovery times, the treatment is now an essential part of accelerated postoperative recovery.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
