California Patent of the Month – July 2021

Sakata Seed America, Inc. focuses on development and production of vegetables and different produce with high quality performance and yields. They have recently developed a new and distinct type of broccoli – a designated purple baby broccoli.

They designed this purple baby broccoli to have purple stems and reach maturity quite quickly. In order to achieve this, they worked to create a unique plant breeding system which controlled for the weaknesses and “faulty” traits to move towards their desired produce. Their method of development involved crossing a traditional broccoli plant with a gai-lan plant and then strategically cross breeding to achieve a purple head and stem. The hybrid seed is produced by manual crosses between selected male-fertile parents or by using male sterility systems. These hybrids are selected for certain single gene traits such as fruit color, flower color, pubescence color or herbicide resistance which indicate that the seed is truly a hybrid. Sakata Seed America has successfully hybridized broccoli, creating a high yield and good texture. The seeds they developed successfully produce the desired purple broccoli and seeds to continue the growth of the crop.
