California Patent of the Month – July 2022

LiteGear, Inc. was founded in 2006 with the intention of developing novel and innovative solutions for LED lighting equipment across Cinema, TC, and HD Video industries. They have since grown to be a major supplier of multiple advanced motion picture LED lighting solutions for a range of on-set needs. Recently, they have developed a method for using artificial light to mimic natural lighting with ease.

On occasion, a set will need to recreate natural lighting with various artificial light sources. Unfortunately, the way these lights are picked up by digital camera light sensors does not always transfer well for viewing on a TV. LiteGear’s system compensates for these artificial light sources as well as conventional cameras and film stock to better mimic the desired natural light.

The solution uses luminaires which have been adapted to apply an auto-gradient effect across pixels (i.e LED). A controller takes in the “start” value of any pixel which reflects the artificial lights used on-set. An “end” value is also received which indicates the desired details for the natural lighting. The controller then interpolates a gradient effect for the middle light parameter for all pixels in between. Using this auto-gradient, filming can continue without worrying about poor lighting in the end result.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
