California Patent of the Month – June 2025
A new implantable device developed by PERCUSENSE promises to streamline chronic disease management by combining real-time biochemical monitoring and medication delivery into a single, in vivo system. U.S. Patent No. 12318199, titled ‘In Vivo sensing and infusion devices’, outlines a miniaturized catheter that could significantly improve how patients with diabetes and other chronic conditions are treated.
Continuous monitoring meets precision therapy
The invention integrates a multi-analyte sensor with a precision drug infusion mechanism, allowing the device to both track physiological markers and respond with targeted dosing-all from inside the body. This closed-loop system aims to improve accuracy, reduce patient burden, and enable more adaptive therapies. Unlike traditional wearable monitors or pump systems, the catheter operates beneath the skin, making long-term use more discreet and less disruptive.
Smaller, smarter, and built for longevity
The design includes multiple lumens and a novel membrane structure to enable both sensing and delivery through a single pathway. It also emphasizes long-term biocompatibility, with specialized coatings and modular elements that reduce the risk of inflammation or sensor drift. According to the patent, the system is scalable for different fluid types and sensor configurations, making it adaptable for future clinical needs.
Potential leap forward in chronic care
By combining diagnostic and therapeutic functions into one implantable platform, PERCUSENSE could reduce the complexity of managing diseases like diabetes. If brought to market, the technology may lead to fewer devices, fewer interventions, and better outcomes for patients.
