California Patent of the Month – March 2025
Ziteo Medical has launched a groundbreaking handheld device that could reshape surgical imaging. The compact tool combines a gamma ray sensor with a built-in tracking camera. This design allows it to detect radiation sources and map their positions with real-time precision—directly inside the patient.
Integrated Tracking, No Line-of-Sight Issues
Most surgical navigation tools rely on external cameras. These can lose track of instruments when the view is blocked. Ziteo’s device avoids that problem. Its camera is built into the same housing as the sensor. It captures images and calculates its own position relative to the patient, without needing external help.
Real-Time 3D Imaging and Feedback
As the device scans, it instantly combines camera images and gamma signals. This produces a 3D model of the tissue and highlights areas where radiation is detected. Surgeons can see this model live on a built-in screen.
It also shows which areas have been scanned enough. This feedback helps ensure that no part of the target tissue is missed.
Better Outcomes, Smarter Tools
Ziteo’s innovation is designed for biopsies, tissue removal, and other image-guided procedures. With real-time feedback and precise imaging, it helps improve accuracy and reduce surgical errors.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
