California Patent of the Month – October 2021

Pulse oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the blood. It is an easy, painless measure of how well oxygen is being sent to parts of your body furthest from your heart, such as the arms and legs. The traditional method uses an optical probe with two LEDs and a silicon detector. The detector detects light from the LEDs after it passes through some part of a patient’s body. These require connection cables to join with the disposable sensors. The cables are expensive and therefore often reused. This method of reusing can introduce sanitation risks to patients. The cable also limits the patient’s mobility and range of motion. True Wearables, Inc. has designed a wireless pulse oximeter with disposable sensors that make this device less expensive for the hospital and safer and easier on the patient.

Their device is set up in compact, easy-to-use assemblies with an economic fabrication. The design is small compared to other traditional designs, which allows it to be manufactured at a lower cost and easier to handle by doctors and patients. The device is cordless, wireless, continuous, and fully disposable for a single use. By reducing the size and cost of materials, it can be easily afforded for single use thereby reducing contamination risk. By removing the cords and wires, it is less intrusive to the patient and more comfortable during use. By tracking oxygen saturation (SpO2), pulse rate (PR), perfusion index (PI), and peripheral blood pressure (SpBP) athletes, fitness enthusiasts and aviators can improve their performance and expand their limits. Overall, this make pulse oximetry more accessible to those who need it.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
