Colorado Patent of the Month – September 2024

Stored Energy Systems LLC (SENS) has introduced an innovative battery charging system that addresses a critical issue in emergency generator operations: battery failure. The system is designed to extend battery life while ensuring reliability in critical power applications. Traditional continuous float-charging often leads to premature battery degradation, especially in environments where batteries must remain constantly charged to support emergency generators. SENS tackles this by employing a dynamic voltage control system that adjusts based on battery temperature, charge status, and operational requirements.

At the heart of this invention is a monitoring and control component that precisely measures key battery metrics, including temperature and charge status. The system then dynamically selects appropriate voltage settings—such as boost, float, and eco-float modes—tailored to optimize battery health. This flexibility allows the charger to minimize battery wear, especially in systems where batteries are continuously charged, reducing unnecessary stress on the components.

The charger’s eco-float setting provides minimal charge to maintain batteries in a partial charge state, balancing longevity with the readiness required for emergency operations. By incorporating incremental voltage adjustments and temperature-sensitive algorithms, SENS’s system prevents overcharging and overheating, further extending battery life. This inventive solution not only reduces failure rates but also lowers operational costs by cutting down on energy consumption, making it a significant advancement for industries dependent on uninterrupted power.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
