Connecticut Patent of the Month – July 2021

A great expanse of communications resources are always active – from public wireless networks, private security networks, and the like. Nearly every individual is walking around with a smartphone, and first responders have their own communication resources. These resources are nearly never able to communicate with each other. For instance, different private wireless networks do not communicate with each other. The industry has been developing interoperability products to bridge these gaps but they require cooperation among the involved entities. As such, Mutualink, Inc. has designed a system that uses a biosensor worn by a user to trigger an “event” and activate a camera, also worn by a user, and initiate recording.

The biosensor trigger is connected to the camera and controlled through a software program. In addition to triggering the camera, it triggers a multimedia collaboration session. This connects designated users automatically. For instance, if a police officer is out on a call and an event triggers the activation of the camera and multimedia system, their body cam will begin recording, and automatically send the footage to the station. In addition, it can connect the officer to others, providing automatic voice communications. At the end of the event, the biosensor signals the camera to shut off and cease transmission. The biosensor can monitor factors such as heart rate, where past a threshold, the biosensor marks it as an “event” and activates the system. The system utilizes interoperability gateway devices to ensure successful transmission of all communications.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
