Connecticut Patent of the Month – July 2022

Everyone needs training before they can perform their job the first time. When that training includes the use of expensive equipment or materials, the training is more risky. For instance, learning how to consistently and reliably apply a spray finishing, the trainee must learn the proper distance to hold the spray nozzle from the product, what speed to apply the finish at, and how thick of a coat is needed. However, the equipment, the finishing product, and the product to be finished can all be costly.

Repetition of good practices is essential to build up a skill, but repeatedly wasting product and time adds up quickly. In order to prevent this cost and encourage businesses to allow trainees to really practice their skill, VRSim, Inc. has developed a virtual reality (VR) simulator for skill-oriented training.

The simulator has a workpiece platform with a sensor. The trainee wears a head mounted display unit (HMDU) with VR capability through a camera, speaker, and sensor. A virtual training environment is simulated using complex algorithms, rendering a visual and audio environment the trainee can practice in. Between a controller sensor, the HDMU sensor, and the platform sensor outputs, a processor can determine spatial positioning and the trainee’s movements.

In the example of training in coating applications, the simulator allows the trainee to practice while receiving detailed feedback and analysis, intuitive cues, and customizable lessons. In this way, there are no wasted parts or product and yet the trainee receives all the benefits and knowledge transfer of hours of practice.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
