Connecticut Patent of the Month – June 2022

Pressure ulcers, also called pressure sores or bedsores, are often initially formed after a patient is relegated to a single position for too long. They can add complications to existing health issues and are extremely uncomfortable for the patient. While proper patient care can prevent them, they can come on quite quickly when a patient faces prolonged moisture exposure.

Vener8 Technologies has developed a detection system to alert nurses and medical staff of conditions that might lead to these ulcers. The biofluid detection system utilizes a signaling element, reader, and notification system to detect and alert users to a high fluid condition. The signaling device is made of five elements including:

  1. Sensing element;
  2. Impedance measuring circuit;
  3. Oscillator circuit;
  4. Acoustic transducer;
  5. Power supply.

This system can be incorporated into diapers, incontinence pads, briefs, pads, or any type of sanitary article that absorbs bodily fluids and wastes. The various components of the signaling device detect and measure instances of wetness. If the sanitary article becomes wet, the signaling device registers this and triggers a notification. The notification method itself can be achieved in different ways. For instance, it could trigger an SMS alert to an on-call nurse, an acoustic signal, or display an alert on a screen. The method of alert is based on what would work best for the user and the facility to ensure the patient can be taken care of quickly.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
