In a major leap for cancer surgery, CytoVeris Inc. has patented a method that helps surgeons detect cancer in real time. U.S. Patent No. 12326404, titled “Method and system for detecting cancerous tissue and tumor margin using raman spectroscopy”, introduces a smarter way to find and remove tumors with greater precision.
Better guidance during surgery
Today’s surgeons often rely on visual checks and later lab analysis to judge tumor boundaries. This new system uses light and a special peptide to highlight cancerous cells while the patient is still in surgery. It aims to reduce errors, lower the need for repeat operations, and protect healthy tissue.
How it works
The technique uses a peptide that binds to cancer cells, which live in more acidic environments. When exposed to light, it produces a clear signal-one that doesn’t appear in normal tissue. Surgeons can scan the area, see where the cancer is, and adjust in real time. Narrow filters make this possible without bulky lab equipment.
Real-world impact
This approach could improve patient outcomes, especially in breast-conserving surgery. It helps avoid both over-cutting and missed cancer cells. Fewer follow-up surgeries mean less trauma for patients and lower costs for hospitals. With this invention, tumor detection moves from guesswork to guided precision.
