Connecticut Patent of the Month – November 2022

SKYRE, Inc. is a leader in the hydrogen energy and CO2 conversion industries. The company has made a name for themselves as a provider of green energy solutions that lead to a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. In line with this mission, the company has recently patented an electrochemical CO2 recovery system.

Their system recovers CO2 from the air without requiring complex equipment to first pressurize the air. Their solution uses a scrubber made of metal hydroxide to remove CO2 from a concentrated airstream. This creates a metal carbonate which is then sent to an electrochemical concentrator. This forms a metal hydroxide stream and separate carbon dioxide stream. The metal hydroxide stream is further directed to an electrochemical separator which cleaves the product into its constituents – a hydrogen recycle stream and a metal hydroxide recycle stream. The carbon dioxide stream is sent to a gas liquid separator which splits it into a concentrated carbon dioxide stream and a recycled water stream.

SKYRE’s has hit commercial targets for conversion, efficiency, and cost through extensive R&D. Their solution is relatively simple to implement, making their innovative solution even more accessible in a time where industries are feeling increasing pressure to improve their sustainability.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
