Delaware Patent of the Month – December 2022

Children’s play time is crucial for building the foundation for higher-order thinking learning. While we might think they are simply stacking cubes or putting shapes together, they are learning logic and problem solving. Kontu, Inc. builds on this learn/play time, building multi-sensory, magnetic wooden toys to bring the joy of learning to children.

Their magnetic building set is designed to teach young children the concept of numeracy and spelling. The toy provides everything a child needs to build geometric shapes and structures. The toy set has 5 different bars – a 1-bar, 2-bar, 3-bar, 4-bar, and 5-bar. Based on the number of the given bar, there are spaces which can hold blocks. The blocks can be magnetically placed and removed, allowing children to learn the concept of addition and subtraction with a visual representation.

The magnetic component also allows children to treat the components as building blocks, building towers and learning the concepts of strong foundations, balanced weights, and cantilevered designs. Building this inherent understanding from such a young age supports the child’s future development, as new information will simply build off of this foundation. Ultimately, the design supports construction, spatial relations, problem solving, and early mathematical concepts.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
