Delaware Patent of the Month – June 2021

Over recent years, wireless communications tech has advanced at a rapid rate. Part of that includes the expansion of wireless bandwidth and service quality. With this increased bandwidth came further innovation, as developers wanted to experiment with different multimedia content. Transmitting these different formats requires video coding and compression mechanisms to reduce the storage needed and improve speed. Vid Scale, Inc. has recently developed a unique video coding system (VCS) using codec architecture.

This system uses multiple layers including a base layer and enhancement layer. They also developed an inter-layer production processing and management unit. These are configured to receive a video signal which can also be made of multiple layers. The VCS then processes a base layer into an inter-layer reference (ILR) picture through an inter-layer prediction process. The format that results from this process is dependent on the scalability. The VCS can further packetize the information and send it through network abstraction layer units. This scalable video coding provides improved quality for video applications.

Are you developing new software for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
