Delaware Patent of the Month – May 2021

Many industrial processes produce toxic waste water which cannot be recycled or dumped until the toxic substances are removed. This process requires testing the waste water to identify the substances and their concentrations. To date, there are no good ways to test for this as the concentrations and type of materials that are present are constantly changing. This change creates “measurement noise”, making it difficult to have an accurate understanding of the results.Lab testing, such as fine filtrations, is more accurate but can be expensive and take lot’s of time. If a test takes too long, then it is no longer a safe representative of the water supply, which could have changed composition by then.

AMS Trace Metals, Inc has developed an analysis that provides rapid results at the water site. The system automatically draws a sample from the water supply and measures specific metal species, which can be customized as needed. It calculates the total quantity of a specific metal as well as any other forms. For instance, it could detect and measure Selenium as well as SE(IV), a selenium species. Based on these results, the system can then release the required treatment solutions or chemicals into the water system, rendering toxic waste insoluble. The measurements are completed using a voltammetric measurement device with a renewable electrode and can return real-time results rapidly and accurately.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
