FLORIDA INVENTION INDEX – MARCH 2025

The Invention Index measures a country’s or state’s innovation output by comparing GDP growth with patent production growth.

Florida Invention Index March 2025: 3.38% (A+ grade)

Florida Invention Index over the last year:

FL Invention INDEX (3)

Anything over C grade is positive sentiment; anything under C is negative outlook/sentiment. Using that sentiment, it is possible to observe trends over time, and also compare states/countries. In doing so we can predict which states have the best chance to recover economically from the pandemic (or any other economic incident that may occur).

Discussion:

In March, the Florida Invention Index scored a positive sentiment which was lower than the previous year’s average and underperformed the downward trend for the year. This is in contrast to the prior 12 months, which experienced a considerable upward trend. As the world continues to recover from the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is unclear if there is any backlog of applications awaiting approval or if the department has fully caught up. If approvals are not yet caught up, we may see a decrease in approvals – and a reduced Invention Index – in the coming months/years as the state feels the full economic impact of companies closing and/or being forced to minimize their staffing and therefore minimize their R&D work hours.

Month Invention Index Score
September 2024 3.70% (A+ grade)
October 2024 5.08% (A+ grade)
November 2024 2.76% (A- grade)
December 2024 4.78% (A+ grade)
January 2025 3.26% (A grade)
February 2025 3.30% (A grade)
March 2025 3.38% (A+ grade)

Trends in the Scores Over Time

The Florida Invention Index scores over the past seven months demonstrate consistent positive sentiment, with all scores above the ‘C’ grade threshold. Notably, October 2024 achieved the highest score at 5.08% (A+ grade), indicating a peak in innovation output during that month. While November 2024 saw a dip to 2.76% (A- grade), the subsequent months maintained strong performance, reflecting sustained innovation activity in Florida.

Possible Reasons Behind Increases or Decreases

The fluctuations in the Invention Index scores could be attributed to various factors, including economic conditions, policy changes, or shifts in research and development investments. The peak in October 2024 may result from end-of-year initiatives or increased patent filings. Conversely, the dip in November 2024 might reflect temporary challenges or delays in innovation processes.

Implications of Higher vs. Lower Scores for Innovation and the Local Economy

Higher Invention Index scores signify robust innovation output, which can lead to economic growth, job creation, and increased competitiveness for Florida. Sustained high scores suggest a thriving environment for research and development, attracting investments and fostering technological advancements. Lower scores, while still positive, may indicate areas needing attention to maintain momentum in innovation activities.

Any Standout Anomalies or Shifts Worth Noting

The significant increase in October 2024’s score to 5.08% (A+ grade) stands out as an anomaly, marking the highest point in the observed period. This spike could be due to specific events or initiatives that boosted innovation output. Additionally, the dip in November 2024 to 2.76% (A- grade) presents a notable fluctuation, which may warrant further investigation to understand the underlying causes.
