Florida Patent of the Month – April 2023

Presbyopia, or more commonly known as farsightedness, is an age-related degradation of the eyes. Those afflicted gradually lose the ability to see things clearly up close and, while a normal part of aging, can be quite frustrating. It happens as the eye lens begins to fail to focus light correctly on the retina.

LENSAR, Inc., the leader in next-generation femtosecond laser technology for refractive cataract surgery, has dedicated their expertise to solving presbyopia without the need for bifocals. This commitment has recently been awarded with a patent for their innovative laser treatment method.

The invention by LENSAR delivers a laser beam to the eye lens, deforming and correcting the lens shape to help properly refract and focus light. The laser patterns are guided with precision to create structures within the lens of an eye. By delivering a laser beam in a specific delivery pattern, the laser beam creates structures in the lens with an AP pillar, an equatorial pillar, and an annular shape-changing zone having laser-affected lens material and the lens capsule. These structures provide an increase in the effective depth of focus that is greater than the depth of focus based upon wavefront analysis.

This precision modification of the lens helps to reverse the effect of aging, restoring the ability to focus light and therefore to see clearly up close. A more permanent treatment option reduces the need to buy and replace glasses or bifocals every year.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
