Florida Patent of the Month – February 2021

It is not uncommon for bones to be anatomically misaligned and surgical intervention is sometimes the best way to realign the bones. These realignments are meant to reduce discomfort or improve the quality of life. Treace Medical Concepts, Inc. has been developing a bone cutting guide to try and improve this realignment process. This guide focuses on the bones of the human foot.

The guide system includes a main component that will help to position it relative to the foot. The main body will house a shaft that can be moved into position. The shaft will contain a cutting member which can be changed depending on the type of cut needed. They also designed the structure to use positioning pins which can hold the bone in place or bones together. This type of system is useful in surgery to temporarily hold bones in a set position for cutting. Treace expects it to help in resetting broken or fractured bones as well as in bone fusing procedures. In surgery, the bone can be cut to make other components accessible, while the bone is held in position and then moved back into place.
