Florida Patent of the Month – November 2020

Everyone loves a good night’s sleep. Waking up feeling refreshed and ready for the day is one of the best feelings. On the opposite end of the spectrum is waking up groggy and tired after being awoken during the night. We all sleep in cycles. You might have heard of them, or at least rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which is the final phase of the sleep cycle. During this phase, our bodies cannot regulate their own temperature, so fluctuations in temperature can easily wake us. A way to combat unwanted temperature changes is to use the right bedding. That’s why Werner Media Partners, LLC has developed a cooling pillow to help sleepers balance their body’s temperature.

The head is important for temperature balance. However, conventional pillows act as insulators, keeping heat in, which isn’t great on a hot night. Werner Media Partners’ cooling pillow is made of a perforated gel foam block that has increased airflow throughout the pillow and creates a gust of cool air when compressed. The pillow has a specific number of perforations to ensure it’s compressible, but still retains its form. The pillow also incorporates organic phase changing material (material that absorbs and releases heat to change physical state) mixed with polyurethane foam, so the surface heats and cools according to the sleeper’s thermal needs.

Are you developing new materials or using existing ones in novel applications? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
