Hawaii Patent of the Month – August 2022
Kuehnle AgroSystems, Inc. (KAS), a Hawaii biotech company, has been researching the use of subterranean microalgae in the production of microbial masses. Experts in microalgae, the R&D company creates specialty products with this microalgae, developing chemicals and raw materials to make life better. This ranges from plant-based ingredients used in aqua feeds, vegetarian foods, and even cosmetics and personal care products.
Recently, the company was awarded a patent for the methods developed to synthesize products from microalgae. In this process, microalgal cells are first obtained from their subterranean habitats and cultured in a range of environments depending on the desired final product. By changing these environmental characteristics, the process can effectively manufacture a range of products including water-soluble carotenoids for use in sunscreen or exopolysaccharides to be used in moisturizers.
Patents like these are supported by the company’s extensive library of Hawaiian microalgal strains and exotic plant cell cultures. This expertise supports the cross-disciplinary applications of their products and the development of new technologies, from cell line creation to process scale-up methodologies.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
