Hawai’i Patent of the Month – January 2023

Based in Hawai’i, Simple Strap, LLC was founded when three watermen, Jon, Ben, and CJ, realized they had no strap capable of securely holding an ama on their canoe. Every strap they tried was either the wrong size, length, or strength for the job. Simple Strap has since solved this problem by designing a flexible strap that can accommodate objects of various shapes and sizes. It is also cost-efficient, making it an affordable option for everyone.

What sets Simple Strap apart from other securing devices is its unique design. The strap is made from a self-gripping, high grade TPE rubber that has a high coefficient of friction, ensuring that the strap stays in place once it’s been secured. In fact, this friction is what allows the strap to be secured in place (i.e. self-gripping) without any knots, hooks, or ratchets. This makes it easy to install and remove, and it’s also reusable, making it a sustainable option.

Starting from their initial conversation about securing an ama, Simple Strap committed to endless hours of research, designing, prototyping, and testing before achieving this versatile tie-down design. Through this process, the company realized their strap would benefit more than just watermen – offering a safe and versatile solution for construction, bundling lumber, roof racks, and nearly any time something needs to be strapped down.
