Hawaii Patent of the Month – March 2021

As implants are modified and redesigned with stronger materials, the surgical cutters must adapt to match. Conventional surgical cutters fail to provide the required leverage and strength needed to cleanly cut stronger implants. Pacific Instruments, Inc has redesigned surgical cutters to be able to handle the job with ease.

Their design resembles bolt cutters, with long arms to provide optimal leverage. The implant is placed between the cutter jaws. As the arms are closed together, so are the jaws, thereby severing the implant. The handles are made to be adjustable to increase their range of use which might be limited by the placement of the implant. Connecting pieces can help to customize the design of the cutters, to make the movement easier. For instance, the arms could be situated similar to a pair of scissors, with the jaws ahead of them. If the space is limited, the handles could be readjusted to extend towards the jaws which would continue to provide increased strength while minimizing the space required for use. Depending on the length of arm used, these scissors could provide strength 10 times greater than conventional surgical cutters.
