Hawaii Patent of the Month – March 2025
A new invention by Makai Ocean Engineering, Inc. could change how offshore structures are built. The company has developed a smart anchoring system that mixes grout underwater, cutting both costs and environmental impact.
Grout Mixing Happens Underwater
Instead of mixing grout on a ship and sending it down to the seafloor, this system brings dry grout directly to the ocean bottom. Then, water—either seawater or fresh—is added. As the chamber fills, it expands, and a paddle powered by a small motor mixes the grout on the spot.
As a result, the process is simpler and faster. It also removes the need for long hoses or large support vessels, which are expensive and hard to schedule.
Cleaner and Easier to Use
The system connects to a subsea drill rig that installs anchors called micropiles. While drilling, a special hood captures loose sediment. After that, a built-in filter cleans the water before it is released.
In addition, the system can move on its own using wheels, tracks, or underwater thrusters. This means fewer people and machines are needed during setup.
A Big Step for Offshore Projects
This anchoring system could help in many fields—such as renewable energy, oil and gas, and underwater pipelines. Because it is lighter, cheaper, and more eco-friendly, it offers a better way to build in the deep sea.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
