Idaho Patent of the Month – February 2021

Color banding is a problem in a wide variety of industries – from computer graphics and photography to LED lighting used residentially or commercially. Simply LEDs, LLC has been working on a method to disband color banding in lensed LED light fixtures.

A lens is a clear or transparent cover designed to control the light emitting from the LED chips and direct it into a given beam pattern. The light is composed of LED dies affixed to a circuit board with some providing a blue tone and some a yellow tone. The lens disperses these different colours to spread the light over a large area with uniform illumination. However, the LEDs near the edge produce color banding because they end up reflecting more light.

Simply LEDs method would involve changing the way the LEDs are positioned on the circuit board. By changing the rotation and proximity of the LEDs, the colours are misaligned and creates a better averaging effect. The averaged color has a better blend between the blue and yellow and reduces the color banding effect. Simply LEDs designed this method with street lights in mind but any lensed light fixture could benefit from this reduced color banding.

About Simply LEDs

SimplyLEDs was founded in 2005 by Electrical Engineers with a desire to do something very different – engineer lighting. They understand that LED light bulbs have become the standard in energy saving lighting and support projects with customized LED lighting.

Are you redesigning existing technology? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
