Idaho Patent of the Month – July 2021

Monster Trucks can tackle huge objects and offroad conditions, but tend to flip right over if they take a corner too quickly or if the object being climbed is too steep. This is the result of the high center of gravity which is positioned way above the wheels. A Formula One Racecar has the opposite problem, with a low center of gravity and great cornering capability at high speeds – but cannot handle all-terrain conditions. Paha Designs, LLC has developed a vehicle that combines the best of both car styles.

Their vehicle is capable of cornering at high speeds and also climbing large objects. In order to achieve this, they redesigned the classic vehicle structure to move the majority of the vehicle weight below the axle level – including the engines, motors, batteries and so on. Some, if not all, of these components are moved into the wheels themselves. Moving them into all four wheels – as opposed to in a single wheel – allows for rapid acceleration. The driver will also be positioned within a wheel. The low center of gravity allows the car to resist flipping. They have also designed the vehicle without a top, bottom, front, or back – which means that even if they do flip, the vehicle can just continue on their way, with flexible vehicle controls. The vehicle can also drive across water as well: with completely waterproof tires, the vehicle can propel itself across the surface. In some designs, they also include magnets sufficient to allow for travel up and across metal walls. This design takes all-terrain to a whole new level.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
