Idaho Patent of the Month – November 2021
Aircrafts of all forms are required to make an aircraft visible to observers and other aircrafts. These regulations are outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations, Aeronautics, and Space. Within these regulations are approved anti-collision and position light systems specifically for use in low visibility operations. These are meant to assist in collision prevention by making the aircraft visible to other aircrafts and reduce pilot error in low visibility conditions. AeroLEDs, LLC has designed a system of lights that meet these regulations while reducing the power needed to operate the lights.
Their design provides a light collimation and redirection device to focus and direct light for brighter luminance. The collimation device can reflect, refract, and focus light from a light source, sending it along a line of steradians. This maximizes the perceived luminous intensity at all regulatory required angles of observation. The light is directed into a lens cap which is aerodynamically shaped to reduce drag while magnifying the light emitted. This design represents one of the first advances in the aerospace lighting market in nearly 50 years. Reduced power consumption leads to greater efficiency and sustainability, all the while successfully magnifying the performance of the lights.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
