Illinois Patent of the Month – May 2021

Artificial Intelligence is made of many subcategories. Natural language processing (NLP) and natural language understanding (NLU) are used to take in and process natural language input so that it can understand the higher meanings of the input and respond appropriately. For instance, a software could take in documents, read the text (which is filled with natural language), process it and produce a response. If the response is also in natural language, then the system needs a natural language generator (NLG) and may need to learn from the input to build a solid NLG foundation. Narrative Science Inc. has been developing technology to help build adaptive mechanisms to better learn from the natural language input. Their AI can then apply this learning to produce natural language output.

Narrative Science developed an AI platform that analyzes unstructured text and identifies new forms of expressions for known NLG concepts. It can also discover new concepts or patterns that have not been previously identified. This analysis uses a concept classifier, sentence clusterer, and a term analyzer to break down and understand sentence and paragraph structure. It develops patterns surrounding tense, structure, active/passive phrases and deeper language patterns. These concepts are then presented to the user so that the user can refine the discovery mechanism, expanding the NLG platform accordingly. A common use for a good NLG is automated journalism – where a software scrapes the web for real-time news and writes a text summary for rapid publication. Ofcourse, as the AI industry is advanced by developments like Narrative Science’s, the applications will truly become endless.

Are you developing new software for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
