Illinois Patent of the Month – September 2022

Up to 95% of major data breaches in organizations are caused by internal users. They may be unintentional, such as opening a phishing link which compromises network security, or it could be intentional, in which information is deliberately downloaded onto external drives that can be taken off premises. Traditional security measures such as the use of passwords, encryption, and information containment may not be effective enough to prevent breaches from occurring.

Defend Edge intends to make employee threat management easy, straightforward, and effective for all organizations. They aimed to use artificial intelligence and machine learning to gain real-time data about the risk of data breaches. Their software is incredibly responsive and is able to integrate global data feeds to ensure a robust security system.

Defend Edge’s development makes use of a software system that can detect, identify, and respond to abnormal activity that may be a cyber threat. It can integrate with multiple platforms and systems such as human resources databases, directory service systems, document management platforms, and firewall systems. The software extracts information about user data and behavior from these systems and applies analytics to assign a threat score to each employee. By paying attention to life changes, computer activity, and other user information, an alert is sent if the user has deviated from a baseline behavior. Corrective action can be processed, such as publishing an alert, limiting user privileges, or monitoring the user further. With these unique features, organizations can rest assured that internal breaches will be identified and alerted immediately.
