Indiana Patent of the Month – April 2025
NeurAxis, Inc. has secured U.S. Patent No. 12,285,602, titled “Methods of treating disease using auricular peripheral nerve field stimulation.” The patented technique delivers electrical stimulation to nerves in the outer ear to ease opioid withdrawal symptoms—without drugs or invasive procedures.
Targeted Nerve Stimulation, No Medication Needed
The method focuses on stimulating cranial nerves in the auricular region, including nerves V, VII, IX, and X. This targeted stimulation helps reduce pain and distress during opioid withdrawal. In some cases, a follow-up drug may be used, but only after nerve stimulation has begun—typically within one week.
A Breakthrough for Safer, Accessible Care
Unlike many current treatments, this approach does not rely on daily medications or in-patient detox centers. The technique could be applied in clinics or outpatient settings, expanding access to care while lowering the risk of new drug dependencies.
Innovation in Neuromodulation
This new patent reinforces NeurAxis’s leadership in neuromodulation R&D. By advancing non-invasive options for neurological care, the company aims to reduce barriers for patients seeking safe, effective relief from complex conditions—starting with opioid withdrawal.
