Indiana Patent of the Month – March 2022

SAAM, Inc. is on a mission to save lives and improve health with their air quality detection devices. They have designed these devices to continuously monitor for trace elements of chemicals and particulates in the air through the use of non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) technology.

NDIR techniques have been used for the analysis of gases but have traditionally required mechanical elements (eg. filter wheels) to be accurate. SAAM’s design uses NDIR to achieve multicomponent gas detection. The gas sample passes through a measuring chamber designed to allow a light beam to interact with the sample.

A single detector component can combine up to four specific wavelength filters to measure specific chemical compounds. If the correct dedicated detectors are chosen then standard gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, and hydrocarbons can be reliably detected. Still, other applications can be achieved by modifying the wavelengths the detectors filter. With other designs, the device could be used to detect alcohol on someone’s breath, hydrocarbon vapor monitoring in power transformers, or even anesthesia levels in the operating room.

In any application, the measurements are obtained from a simple sensor through the use of the spectroscopic multicomponent tools and smart sensing capabilities. Their particle sensor is capable of detecting particulates as small as one micrometer and as large as 10 μm.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
