Indiana Patent of the Month – May 2025

Recycling black plastics has long posed a challenge. A new U.S. patent offers a smart solution by using AI to sort what others can’t. U.S. Patent No. 12290842, titled ‘Sorting of dark colored and black plastics’, introduces a system that can detect and separate dark plastics with high accuracy. Sortera Technologies Inc. developed this breakthrough to cut waste and improve recycling.

AI Transforms Plastic Sorting

Conventional recycling systems miss black plastics because their color blocks optical sensors. This innovation uses medium wavelength infrared (MWIR) imaging and machine learning to spot and classify these hard-to-see materials. As a result, recyclers can now recover more types of plastics, including those once discarded.

Reducing Waste, Boosting Reuse

With better sorting, more plastic can be reused rather than landfilled. This means less pollution and a stronger circular economy. In addition, manufacturers can rely more on recycled black plastics for new products. The new system may also lower costs for recyclers, creating both environmental and economic benefits.

Leading the Future of Recycling

This patent sets a new benchmark for recycling technology. By combining AI with infrared imaging, Sortera Technologies Inc. has taken a major step toward smarter waste management. Their invention shows how innovation can turn today’s recycling problems into tomorrow’s opportunities.
